Activision has said thatCall of Dutyhas the best community of fans in the world, and that is why it’s charging a subscription fee forCall of Duty Elite, the new optional service that will soon allow fans access to a variety of extras.

“We have the best online community in the world and we owe it to them to offer an experience that will not only anticipate their needs but will keep getting better and better every single day,” said Chacko Sonny, the boss of Elite developer Beachhead Studios. “That’s what we’ve done withCall of Duty Elite. At last count, all four of theCoDgames between 2007-2010 are currently in the top ten on Xbox Live, and they need us to figure out a way to bring those discrete communities together.

“We want our players to create a single profile and build a relationship with Elite that can continue to evolve with everyCoDgame.”

Idon’t have a huge problemwithElitesince it’s not a mandatory thing and I can still enjoy the bulk of the game, but I can’t say I appreciate a company attempting to dress a paid service up as a treat. I might be a cynic, but offering someone a subscription isn’t a reward for anything. Just admit you want to make money from the obsessive and the gullible and move on.
