Final Fantasy XIVleft beta testing and launched its full build today on Xbox Series X|S, ushering in a whole new group of players ready to explore the length and breadth of Eorzea and beyond. These Xbox players, however, have one extra obstacle the rest of us don’t —FFXIVCoins.
FFXIVCoins are the new currency introduced with the debut of the Xbox version, available from the Microsoft platform’s store. They’re only redeemable on Xbox, and players need them for purchasing items in the Online Store, paying their subscription and using optional services like additional retainers. Square Enix isn’t the first publisher to require an additional currency through a platform that already costs money (thinkFortniteV-Bucks), but the subscription is mandatory. And the MMO’s account system is already a notorious pain.

I can’t help but feel like this is just another annoying step added to those who joinFFXIVthrough Xbox, considering that they already have to pay both their monthly subscription to the game and their Game Pass subscription. On top of this, as with most microtransaction currencies, there are pre-made bundles, so you’re likely to spend more than you need to and have excess Coins left over after making a purchase.
That said, if you play on multiple platforms you can avoid Coins altogether by simply purchasing items on the regular website. However, if you want to purchase something directly through the Xbox Store, you have no choice but to use Coins. At leastFFXIV’s other, secret third thing, Crysta, is optional. Xbox andFFXIVsure havesome bizarre tactics lately.

How to purchaseFFXIVCoins
As a subscription toFFXIVcosts around 1,300 Coins, you’ll, at the very least, need to purchase the 14.99 USD bundle every month to pay for it. On the plus side, every four or so months, you’ll get a free month as long as you haven’t used your excess coins to buy any of the currently available Glamor items from theFFXIVStore.
To purchaseFFXIVCoins, make your way to the Xbox Store and find the add-ons page forFFXIV. Here, you’ll see your six choices for Coins bundles:
