Tactical combat games are most definitely back in style

I’m gladXCOM: Enemy Unknownhas given the tactical combat genre a shot in the arm.Halfwayfrom German based indie studioRobotalityis a great-looking, pixel-art tactical game that marries the top-down view point of a game likeAlien SwarmwithXCOM‘s tactical, turn-based combat. The art direction looks great and I’d love to have a game like this running on my laptop.

One thing I’m liking in the alpha footage above is the speed of the game; it looks like there’s already a nice fluid and easy to use interface that allows the player to make some quick decisions. Robotality is blogging its development progress and the latest update is all aboutlevel creation tools and the desire to support modding. Looks like there’s some easy-to-use tools available and that’s always a plus in my book. There’s no firm release date but the blog mentions a launch “this year” so I’m hoping to get some more info soon.
