To use a Gas Mask, you have to equip it in your Head slot. Now whenever you go to an area filled with green-colored toxic gas, it will protect you. You must also carry many Gas Filters with you as one Gas Filter will get drained every45 seconds.
To craft a Gas Filter, you need2x Fabric, 10x Coal, and 2x Iron Plates. The more Gas Filters you have, the longer you can stay and explore those toxic areas.
