Hooded Horse and Digital Sunhave releasedCataclismo, a siege defense game that has you piecing together buildings, into Early Access today.

The hordes are coming, and the only thing standing between the people and total annihilation is you. Thankfully, you can dig up some rock and put up a few walls.

Cataclismoissort oflike a tower defense game in the sense that you need to protect something from a horde of enemies. The big difference is that you’re mainly constructing walls and placing units atop them as defensive points. In a sense, it’s more like amodernRampart, which is pretty exciting.

The big distinction from a normal tower defense game is that you construct the buildings, piece by piece. You’re not just plopping down fully constructed nodes in the path of enemies, but designing defensive positions for your soldiers.

I can see that as either being extremely fun or a massive chore. Build modes are hit-and-miss for me. I can definitely design stuff, but I’d rather just get on with business. Then there’s the possibility that it becomes too repetitive to move to a new level and start building over and over. On the other hand, I do love a good turtling game. I want to play it.

Speaking of which, there are three modes toCataclismo: narrative (currently a tutorial and 11 levels with more coming later), skirmish (two maps), and challenge (one randomly generated biome). There is also a map editor so you can download new areas to try and defend. Digital Sun is planning that the Early Access will last a year.
