Industry analyst Michael “Pink Toothbrush” Pachter has stated that theWii Uwill not succeed as intended, and criticized Nintendo for believing that it can do something novel and come out on top.
“I don’t think they suck — I just think that they really believe that, ‘If we’re still novel, everything we do will work.’ This isn’t going to work,” he said. “Hardcore gamers will buy them; hardcore Nintendo fanboys will buy it. They could put out a piece of cardboard and say that it’ll play Mario and they’ll buy it.”
Interestingly, he also claimed that theWii U Pro Controllerexists because Activision threatened to withholdCall of Dutyfrom the system without one: “Activision never said anything to me, but I know that [for] big games likeCall Of Dutythey said, ‘No, we’re not putting it on there if you don’t give us a conventional controller’. So they gave in.”
Given what a surprise the Wii’s success was, I don’t think anybody can call this one. It could perform well, or it could see Nintendo sink back to the bottom of the pile. Whatever happens, I’m excited to see how it goes, and Iamkind of looking forward to the system itself. So, that’s something.
