How many times while playing throughFallout 3did you stop to wish you had your very own Pip-Boy 3000? Every five minutes? Me too. Now, we’re one step closer to actually having our very own Pip-Boy, straight from the vault. During theSpaceWearables: Fashion Designer to Astronautschallenge, a group of coders under the moniker of Team Reno banded together to create their very own impressive, 3D-printable Pip-Boy 3000. Truly, we are living in the future.
An iPhone 5 powers the device that runs a special app to mimic that of the Pip-Boy’s iconic interface. It displays a great deal of environmental info, and the included Geiger counter measures radiation like a boss.
“We wanted to make a piece of popular science fiction into a reality so we chose the Pip-Boy 3000 from the gameFallout 3,” Team Renoexplained. “The goal was to bring environmental sensors into an easy-to-use cuff device that could help a wearer determine if their environment is safe for navigation or helmet removal.” And though the team ran out of time before they could implement a Bluetooth heart monitor for vital signs, this is still an awesome replica if I ever did see one.
