Rockstar has generated over half a billion – yes, billion – dollars through microtransactions onGrand Theft Auto Online.

The news was revealed as part of ex-Rockstar North’s president Leslie Benzie’s $150mlawsuitagainst the studio.

Grand Theft Auto V’s multiplayer mode is free to play (well, once you have the base game, anyways), and it seems people are happy to fork out for add-ons courtesy of the various microtransactions.

The lawsuit states that “GTA Onlinehas the potential to achieve the greatest profit margin of any game created in the GTA franchise,” (viaGamespot), chiefly because there a “nearly 100 percent profit margin” on these vanity items.

In contrast, we’ve spent “only” $1.5 million on microtransactions inHalo 5:Guardians.

If you thought the hype aroundGrand Theft Auto V– and specifically, the multiplayer componentGTA Online– was over, think again. According to Take-Two’s CEO, even two years on,players continued to be “highly engaged” with the multiplayer game.
